Looking for a unique adventure away from the usual tourist spots? Join Salkantay Trekkers Peru on the Waqrapukara Full Day Hike! This tour takes you to Waqrapukara, a stunning pre-Inca archaeological site nestled in the Acomayo province of the Cusco region. At 4,140 meters (13,575 feet) above sea level, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the Apurimac River and the Andes Mountains.

What is Waqrapukara?

Waqrapukara means “Strength with Horns” in Quechua. The name comes from its unique shape, resembling horns or flame ears, as some locals call it “Llamapukara”. Built by the pre-Inca Qanchis culture between 1500 BC and 1000 BC, it was once a city called “Llaqta Pukara” and served as the headquarters for a Qanchi leader. It was also an astronomical observatory and a sanctuary for the god Teqci Pachakamaq Wiraqocha (Creator of all things).

Later, the Incas took over and adapted the site to fit the landscape during the reign of Wayna Qhapaq. In 2017, the Peruvian Ministry of Culture declared Waqrapukara a Cultural Heritage of the Nation.
