The experience of a lifetime awaits you as you embark on a 4-Day Salkantay to Machu Picchu Trek, perfect for people who want to capture the essence of the Salkantay experience in just a few short days.
gThis trek takes you through some of the most breathtaking scenery of the Salkantay mountains and laciers, all within four days of dynamic trekking. On Day one, you’ll visit the Humantay Lagoon and have a peaceful night at the beautiful private camp of Quiswarniyoc. Day two takes you to the breathtaking Salkantay Pass at 4,700 m, which would be the highest point of your trek, and from here, you will descend to the nice Chawllay campsite. On Day three, walk through the beautiful Santa Teresa Valley, with its agriculture, until you reach Aguas Calientes in the evening. Day four will see you exploring the iconic Machu Picchu.
The 4-Day Salkantay Trek is designed for those who want a more efficient trip compared with the traditional 5-Day. While the 5-day trek allows for many activities like enjoying hot springs or the trek to the Llactapata viewpoint, the 4-day trek doesn’t waste time and gets you there in a timely fashion. Perfect for those that need to use their time wisely, but do not want to miss embracing the natural splendidness and cultural wealth of the Salkantay trail and the magnificent Machu Picchu.
Included in the package is a ticket to Machu Picchu, which we book for you. These normally include guided circuit tours of 1, 2, or 3. These circuits are very busy, so please reserve your spot at least three months in advance! If these circuits happen to be booked, we will put you on circuits 4 or 5.
The main point of difference between these circuits is the point of access to Machu Picchu. Circuits 1, 2, and 3 provide entry from the higher parts of the Unesco site, enabling birds-eye photos and supposed views of Machu Picchu while the 4th and 5th circuits gain access from the lower area which does not view famous scenery.
They need to know that no single circuit takes the whole Inca citadel. However, each has included a 2-2.5 hour guided tour with an expert guide that ensures a total and educational experience of Machu Picchu.
Lastly, for those who are last-minute bookers and don’t find their chosen circuits available, the option left for them is to buy tickets to get to the Aguas Calientes town. See the link for more details.

Your Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu begins with hotel pickups in Cusco scheduled between 4:30 and 5:00 AM. During this time, the guide will collect all the participants from their hotels in Cusco. From that point, they would leave Cusco at approximately 5:15 AM by means of a car, which would take around 2 hours to reach the town of Mollepata. Journey to Soraypampa:
After breakfast, the journey continues by car for an hour more to get to Soraypampa. The group of muleteers and horses will be met at Soraypampa, thus marking the official start of the Salkantay trek. Before the hike, all of your equipment and duffle bags will be handed over to the muleteers and horses. The trek up to the Humantay Lagoon will begin in Soraypampa. The elevation at Soraypampa is around 3,900 meters, and the lagoon is at 4,200 meters above sea level. The first part of the walk involves a steady built-up for 1 hour, then a steeper climb for the last hour of the walk, in total around 2 hours of hiking to the lagoon.
At Humantay Lagoon:
Upon arrival at Humantay Lagoon, you’ll have free time to soak in the stunning views, capture photographs, and listen to the guide’s insights. The visit to the lagoon typically lasts between 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on weather conditions. After enjoying the lagoon, the descent towards the Quiswarniyoc campsite begins. This descent includes a 1-hour downhill walk followed by a nearly flat trek lasting about 45 minutes.

You will join a group of diverse travelers from around the world. Groups typically consist of 8 to 12 people, with a maximum of 16. The departure dates are fixed, and the itinerary and pace are set by the guide to accommodate the overall group’s needs. This shared experience is perfect for making new friends while enjoying the spectacular landscapes of the Salkantay trail.

Opting for a private service offers unparalleled flexibility and a personalized trekking experience. Your tour will be exclusive to your group, whether you are a solo traveler, a couple, or a family. This allows you to set your own pace, spend more time at viewpoints that interest you, and tailor the start times to your preference. The guide’s full attention is dedicated to your group, ensuring a more intimate and in-depth exploration of the culture and nature along the trail. All services, from transport to meals, are operated exclusively for you.

The Vistadome train offers a significant upgrade for your return journey from Aguas Calientes. It features panoramic windows on the walls and ceilings, providing expansive views of the Andean landscape. This service also includes onboard entertainment and snacks, making the trip back more comfortable and scenic.
Day 2 involves the most challenging ascent to the Salkantay Pass. Renting an emergency horse provides a safety net. You can ride it if you feel tired or affected by the altitude, ensuring you can complete the most difficult section of the trek without exhausting yourself. The horse is typically available for the uphill portion to the pass.
The trek includes a duffel bag for your personal belongings carried by the horses. If you need to bring extra gear, clothing, or personal items beyond the standard allowance, renting an extra duffel provides the necessary space. This is handled by our muleteers, so you only carry your daypack.
Trekking poles are highly recommended. They provide stability on uneven and steep terrain, reduce the impact on your knees during descents, and help propel you forward during ascents, saving valuable energy throughout the trek.
While the Mountain Sky Huts provide shelter, nights at high altitudes are very cold. Renting a professional-grade, four-season sleeping bag ensures you stay warm and comfortable, which is crucial for a good night’s rest and proper recovery for the next day’s hike.
This upgrade is for solo travelers who prefer their own private space. It guarantees a single-occupancy Mountain Sky Hut for the two nights of camping and a private room at the hotel in Aguas Calientes on the third night.
A discount is available for students who present a valid, physical student ID card with a photograph, university name, and expiration date. The card must be valid for the entire duration of the trek. Photocopies or digital IDs are not accepted.
A discount is available for trekkers under the age of 18. A copy of their passport must be provided at the time of booking to be eligible.
Machu Picchu Information
The return from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo is via train. The standard service included is the Expedition or Voyager class, which offers comfortable seating and windows to view the scenery. You can upgrade to the Vistadome train for a more immersive experience with panoramic glass windows and a higher level of service.
As per the regulations from the Ministry of Culture, Machu Picchu is divided into several circuits to manage visitor flow and preserve the site. This itinerary is designed for Circuit 2, which is the most comprehensive route. It allows you to visit the upper terraces for the classic postcard photo, explore the main plazas, see the Intihuatana stone, the Temple of the Sun, and the Temple of the Condor. Should tickets for Circuit 2 be unavailable at your desired time, our team will coordinate with you to select the best alternative circuit available to ensure a fulfilling visit.
These hikes offer incredible aerial views of the Inca citadel but must be booked far in advance due to limited permits. They are not included in the standard tour.
This is the steep, iconic peak seen behind Machu Picchu in classic photos. The hike is challenging, involving narrow paths and steep steps, but it rewards you with unparalleled, close-up views of the citadel. The climb takes approximately 2 hours round trip.
Located on the opposite side of the citadel from Huayna Picchu, this mountain offers a longer, less steep, but higher climb. The panoramic views from the top are more expansive, showing Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and the surrounding Salkantay and Vilcanota mountain ranges. The hike takes approximately 3.5 hours round trip.
