SALKANTAY TREK 4 DAYS TO MACHU PICCHU

from US $ 580.00
from US $ 580.00

Overview

The experience of a lifetime awaits you as you embark on a 4-Day Salkantay to Machu Picchu Trek, perfect for people who want to capture the essence of the Salkantay experience in just a few short days.

gThis trek takes you through some of the most breathtaking scenery of the Salkantay mountains and laciers, all within four days of dynamic trekking. On Day one, you’ll visit the Humantay Lagoon and have a peaceful night at the beautiful private camp of Quiswarniyoc. Day two takes you to the breathtaking Salkantay Pass at 4,700 m, which would be the highest point of your trek, and from here, you will descend to the nice Chawllay campsite. On Day three, walk through the beautiful Santa Teresa Valley, with its agriculture, until you reach Aguas Calientes in the evening. Day four will see you exploring the iconic Machu Picchu.

The 4-Day Salkantay Trek is designed for those who want a more efficient trip compared with the traditional 5-Day. While the 5-day trek allows for many activities like enjoying hot springs or the trek to the Llactapata viewpoint, the 4-day trek doesn’t waste time and gets you there in a timely fashion. Perfect for those that need to use their time wisely, but do not want to miss embracing the natural splendidness and cultural wealth of the Salkantay trail and the magnificent Machu Picchu.

Included in the package is a ticket to Machu Picchu, which we book for you. These normally include guided circuit tours of 1, 2, or 3. These circuits are very busy, so please reserve your spot at least three months in advance! If these circuits happen to be booked, we will put you on circuits 4 or 5.

The main point of difference between these circuits is the point of access to Machu Picchu. Circuits 1, 2, and 3 provide entry from the higher parts of the Unesco site, enabling birds-eye photos and supposed views of Machu Picchu while the 4th and 5th circuits gain access from the lower area which does not view famous scenery.

They need to know that no single circuit takes the whole Inca citadel. However, each has included a 2-2.5 hour guided tour with an expert guide that ensures a total and educational experience of Machu Picchu.

Lastly, for those who are last-minute bookers and don’t find their chosen circuits available, the option left for them is to buy tickets to get to the Aguas Calientes town. See the link for more details.

DAY 1: CUSCO, EXPLORATION OF HUMANTAY LAKE, AND CAMPING AT QUISWARNIYOC

Start of the Trek:

Your Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu begins with hotel pickups in Cusco scheduled between 4:30 and 5:00 AM. During this time, the guide will collect all the participants from their hotels in Cusco. From that point, they would leave Cusco at approximately 5:15 AM by means of a car, which would take around 2 hours to reach the town of Mollepata. Breakfast is served at a local restaurant in Mollepata, at well-acquainted with the tour package. Normally, the breakfast and final supply shopping in Mollepata takes one hour.

Journey to Soraypampa:

After breakfast, the journey continues by car for an hour more to get to Soraypampa. The group of muleteers and horses will be met at Soraypampa, thus marking the official start of the Salkantay trek. Before the hike, all of your equipment and duffle bags will be handed over to the muleteers and horses. The trek up to the Humantay Lagoon will begin in Soraypampa. The elevation at Soraypampa is around 3,900 meters, and the lagoon is at 4,200 meters above sea level. The first part of the walk involves a steady built-up for 1 hour, then a steeper climb for the last hour of the walk, in total around 2 hours of hiking to the lagoon.

At Humantay Lagoon:

Upon arrival at Humantay Lagoon, you’ll have free time to soak in the stunning views, capture photographs, and listen to the guide’s insights. Subsequently, our expert Machu Picchu guide will lead a 2.5-hour tour through the Inca citadel, uncovering the secrets and history that make Machu Picchu a world-renowned wonder.

Independent Exploration Time:

Following the guided tour, you’ll have approximately 30 minutes of free time to continue exploring the site on your own. Please remember that the maximum allowed visiting time at MachuPicchu  is 3 hours, according to park regulations.

Return Options to Cusco:

  • Car Return Option:
    • If you choose the car return option, you must start a roughly 3-hour hike from Machu Picchu to Hydroelectrica.
    • Be at Hydroelectrica by 2:30 PM to catch the car that will transport you from Hydroelectrica to Cusco.
    • This trip takes about 6 hours, arriving in Cusco around 10:00 PM, with the final stop at Plaza Regocijo in the center of Cusco city.
    • This return option does not allow enough time for additional hikes to Waynapicchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, as they require about 3 extra hours.
    • To catch the car at 2:30 PM at Hydroelectrica, it’s recommended to leave Machu Picchu no later than 11:30 AM.
  • Train Return Option:
    • If you opt for the train return, you’ll need to return to the town of Aguas Calientes, which can be done by walking for approximately 1.5 hours or taking a 25-minute bus ride for $12.
    • Once in Aguas Calientes, you’ll have time to explore the town and perhaps have lunch, as the last lunch is not included in the tour.
    • Then, head to the train station to catch the 2:30 PM or 3:30 PM train to Ollantaytambo, a journey of about 1.5 hours.
    • In Ollantaytambo, our transfer service will be waiting to take you back to Cusco by car, a trip of approximately two hours, arriving in Cusco around 6:30 PM.
    • The train option allows for more time at Machu Picchu and is sufficient for the optional mountain hikes. It is faster and more comfortable, making the return to Cusco less tiring.

No Included

Services Not Included in the Salkantay Trek Package and Optional Expenses

We detail below the services and expenses not included in the Salkantay Trek package. These are optional and can be paid directly on-site. Typically, the local community provides these services, and they are common across all companies operating the Salkantay Trek. Our goal is to offer clear and accurate information.

  • Entrance Ticket to Humantay Lagoon: On the first day of the trek, you will visit Humantay Lagoon. This site requires an entrance ticket, which is paid to the local government of Mollepata. The cost is 20 soles for foreigners (approximately 6 dollars) and 10 soles for Peruvians (approximately 3 dollars). Payment is made in soles and in cash at the entrance to the lagoon.
  • Sleeping Bag: If you do not have a suitable sleeping bag for the mountains, you can rent one from us. The sleeping bags we offer are specially designed to withstand the low temperatures of the Salkantay Trek, up to 10 degrees below zero. The rental cost is 10 dollars for the entire route.
  • Trekking Poles: You can rent a pair of professional trekking poles from us. These poles are adjustable according to the type of terrain and are very helpful, especially on steep and rough terrains. They optimize your performance, and the rental cost is 10 dollars for the entire trek.
  • Drinking Water for Bottles: We do not include refilling of water bottles, but we provide water for hot and cold drinks at each meal. For bottle water, you have two options: buy mineral water at small shops along the Salkantay Trail, with prices ranging from 5 to 12 soles per 2.5-liter bottle, or carry a filter or purification tablets for mountain water.
  • Internet Connection: There is no cell signal from 9 am on the first day until reaching the second camp. At this camp, you can access Wi-Fi for 10 soles. After the third day, you will generally have cell signal and internet access.
  • Showers and Toilets along the Trail: Toilets are available at the campsites at no cost, but locals may charge 1 sol for using theirs along the way. As for showers, the second camp offers hot showers for 10 soles, while cold showers are free and use the hot showers at the Aguas Calientes hostel on day 03. Generally, there are no showers available at the first camp due to the low temperatures.
  • Tips: Tips are optional. Feel free to tip or not, but in this tourism service industry, the individuals involved in the course of this trek expect a tip, which occurs not only in our company but also in all trekking companies in Cusco. Everyone working at Machu Picchu Reservations is paid fairly for the work they perform; we even pay much more than companies that charge very high costs for the same trek. Feel free to give a tip or not, but we want to clarify that it is optional, not mandatory.
  • We do not include travel insurance. We suggest acquiring one in your country, as it can be difficult to obtain travel insurance in Peru.

Optional Upgrades

Vistadome Train Upgrade: $85 per person

The Vistadome train offers a significant upgrade for your return journey from Aguas Calientes. It features panoramic windows on the walls and ceilings, providing expansive views of the Andean landscape. This service also includes onboard entertainment and snacks, making the trip back more comfortable and scenic.

Emergency Horse for Day 2: $50

Day 2 involves the most challenging ascent to the Salkantay Pass. Renting an emergency horse provides a safety net. You can ride it if you feel tired or affected by the altitude, ensuring you can complete the most difficult section of the trek without exhausting yourself. The horse is typically available for the uphill portion to the pass.

Extra Duffel Bag (7 kg / 15 lbs): $80

The trek includes a duffel bag for your personal belongings carried by the horses. If you need to bring extra gear, clothing, or personal items beyond the standard allowance, renting an extra duffel provides the necessary space. This is handled by our muleteers, so you only carry your daypack.

Rental of Trekking Poles (Pair): $20

Trekking poles are highly recommended. They provide stability on uneven and steep terrain, reduce the impact on your knees during descents, and help propel you forward during ascents, saving valuable energy throughout the trek.

Rental of Sleeping Bag (-10°C / 14°F): $25

While the Mountain Sky Huts provide shelter, nights at high altitudes are very cold. Renting a professional-grade, four-season sleeping bag ensures you stay warm and comfortable, which is crucial for a good night’s rest and proper recovery for the next day’s hike.

Single Occupancy Supplement (Huts & Hotel): $75

This upgrade is for solo travelers who prefer their own private space. It guarantees a single-occupancy Mountain Sky Hut for the two nights of camping and a private room at the hotel in Aguas Calientes on the third night.

A discount is available for students who present a valid, physical student ID card with a photograph, university name, and expiration date. The card must be valid for the entire duration of the trek. Photocopies or digital IDs are not accepted.

A discount is available for trekkers under the age of 18. A copy of their passport must be provided at the time of booking to be eligible.

Circuits at Machu Picchu

As per the regulations from the Ministry of Culture, Machu Picchu is divided into several circuits to manage visitor flow and preserve the site. Should tickets for Circuit 2 be unavailable at your desired time, our team will coordinate with you to select the best alternative circuit available to ensure a fulfilling visit.
