When you arrive in Puerto Maldonado—by plane or bus—your guide will be there to greet you. First stop: our downtown office, where you can sort out your luggage and leave anything you won’t need for the tour. Then, we head over to the Touristic Port (Puerto Capitania), and hop on a motorized boat for a nice, 45-minute ride downstream to Sandoval port. From there, we start our journey right into the heart of Tambopata National Reserve toward the beautiful Sandoval Lake.
To get to Sandoval Lake Lodge, we’ll take a scenic 3-kilometer walk (which might get a bit muddy if it’s rainy). It’s about an hour’s hike. Then, we switch over to a rowing canoe for a peaceful half-hour paddle that takes us to Maloka Sandoval Lodge. Here, you’ll get a warm welcome with a refreshing juice made from local flavors. After a quick orientation, you can settle into your room and relax.
After a good rest, we’ll set off for a night walk through the forest, equipped with flashlights or headlamps. This is the perfect time to catch a glimpse of nighttime critters like night monkeys (Musmuqui), frogs, snakes, and other busy insects. We’ll return to the lodge for a tasty dinner and enjoy a quiet, relaxing night surrounded by nature.
Rise and shine! We’re starting the day with a canoe ride around Sandoval Lake, hoping to spot some amazing and endangered wildlife. One of the highlights is the giant river otter (or river wolf), which lives here in small, close family groups. These big otters, the largest in the world, are pretty territorial. If you’re lucky, you’ll see them hunting and fishing in the early morning—they can eat up to 4 kilograms of fish a day!
After this unforgettable wildlife experience, we’ll head back to the lodge for a hearty breakfast to fuel up for the day. Then, it’s time to say goodbye to the Tambopata National Reserve and make our way back to Sandoval Lake Lodge port on the Madre de Dios River. Our boat will be waiting to take us back to Puerto Maldonado.
Once we’re back, you’ll have a chance to re-pack your things before your guide takes you to the airport. As this incredible adventure wraps up, take a moment to think back on all the amazing memories you’ve made in the untouched rainforest of Peru’s Tambopata region.
All these perks are here to make sure your stay at Sandoval Lake Lodge is comfy, convenient, and packed with great experiences. We aim to make your time in the Tambopata region one you’ll never forget!
