When you get to Puerto Maldonado—whether by plane or bus—your guide will be there to welcome you. They’ll take you to our downtown office where you can sort out your bags and leave anything you don’t need for the tour. Next, we head to the Touristic Port (Puerto Capitania) and hop on a motorized boat for a fun 45-minute ride downstream to Sandoval port. From there, we dive into the heart of Tambopata National Reserve, making our way to the stunning Sandoval Lake.
To reach Sandoval Lake Lodge, we’ll take a scenic 3-kilometer walk (it might get a bit muddy if it’s rainy) that takes about an hour. Once we reach a small port, we’ll switch to a rowing canoe and paddle for half an hour until we arrive at the charming Maloka Sandoval Lodge. When we get there, you’ll be greeted with a refreshing, local-flavored juice. After a quick orientation about the lodge, you can settle into your comfy room.
After a good rest, we’ll head out for an exciting night walk through the forest, armed with flashlights or headlamps. This nighttime adventure is your chance to see cool animals like night monkeys (Musmuqui), frogs, snakes, and other active bugs. We’ll come back to the lodge for a tasty dinner and spend the night in this peaceful, serene spot.
Rise and shine! We’re kicking off the day with a canoe ride around Sandoval Lake, hoping to spot some amazing and endangered animals. One highlight is the giant river otter (also known as the river wolf), which lives here in small family groups. These big otters are the largest in the world and are pretty territorial. If you’re lucky, you’ll see them hunting and fishing in the early morning—they can eat up to 4 kilograms of fish a day!
After this awesome wildlife experience, we’ll head back to the lodge for a hearty breakfast to fuel up for the day. Then, it’s time to say goodbye to the Tambopata National Reserve and make our way back to the Sandoval Lake Lodge port on the Madre de Dios River. Our boat will be waiting to take us back to Puerto Maldonado.
Once we’re back, you’ll have a chance to re-pack your things before your guide takes you to the airport. As this amazing adventure wraps up, take a moment to think about all the great memories you’ve made in the untouched rainforest of Peru’s Tambopata region.
All these perks are here to make your stay at Sandoval Lake Lodge comfy, convenient, and full of great experiences. We want to go above and beyond to help you create unforgettable memories in the Tambopata region!
